View PDFDepending if it’s TPO, rolled torch down asphalt composite, vinyl, spray foam, tar and gravel, and if the layers between the surface and the rafters have foam, fiberglass, plywood etc there are various ways to tie into the roofing system or ballast the solar on it with no penetrations. Key thing is to have some pitch to the panel surface to encourage dew to run off, otherwise a truly flat panel creates a salt pond effect where significant soil layers can lower solar output.

Metal shingle roofs use a steel hook system bolted into the rafter at the deck level with its receiving prong coming out below the drip edge of the metal shingle for the rail to attach to. If there is wood shake between the metal shingle and the roof decking there is more labor and time required to waterproof.
